Could it Get Any Better For This Doll?

There’s only one thing that could make my trip even more amazing (if that is even possible) than it is already: If Alessandra came with me! She’s dying to come. And after seeing the list of events for fashion week, she is determined to find a way to buy a plane ticket. Can you blame her? I mean, it’s going to be A-MA-ZING. Maybe her parents will help her out….. Putting it out there girlfriend!

I Dream of my Casa Filled With Casa Missoni

Today I dreamed about leaving this shelf and decorating my own home. Soooooooo fun! Hello Missoni! From couches to chairs to rugs to everything a stylish doll would want. Hmmmm. I wonder if they make furniture for extra tall dolls like myself…. I should ask Margherita  Maccapani  Missoni? I bet her home is super chic with beautiful accents of Missoni furniture.

Knit-tastic

Who doesn’t love a good knit? They’re chic, breezy, light and make a statement no matter what the occasion. Like this girl I spotted a mile away today waiting outside for her friend. She makes style look easy with her light knit dress, loose sleeves and ruffled neck. Add the woven bag, and you’ve got simple chic. And ladies, we all know how much this doll LOVES knits…

Cycle in Style

Missoni and Target have made riding a bike oh-so-chic. This stylish bike is not one you want to break a sweat on, it’s one that you ride and all the boys sweat you. And then check this out- I found the coolest thing online. Agata Olek (check out her site) crochets these insane pieces that cover lots of different things in amazing colors and patterns that remind me so much of Missoni. She even makes a piece that covers a bike! I wonder if she makes large-scale pieces…

Staying at the Standard

Every time I think things can’t get any better they do! So check this out. I’ve been tweeting with my friend Stan D’arde from The Standard who I met in Milan last year. I had written him to let him know I’m coming to NYC during fashion week for the Target Missoni collection (wish I was already there!) and he is sooooooooooo excited to see me! In fact, I’m gonna be staying at the Standard! Me, my own room, at the very tall, very chic Standard Hotel. I’ve been told everyone stays there during fashion week. Every fabulous room will be filled with a style icon! I feel so lucky to have the privilege of staying there. My porcelain head might explode just thinking about it.

Girls Girls Girls

There’s only one proper way to send this doll off to NYC. Girls’ night out with my fave ladies! And talk about a runway show. Props to Alessandra who worked it the best (no disrespect to the other ladies but you all know it’s true). Totally made up for the heel blunder last time (you know I love you sweets). And wow, did she work it last night: an electric blue silk mini dress. Belted. Black textured peep toe slingbacks. I may be a tall cute doll, but Alessandra made an entrance everywhere we went. What will I do without my girls in NYC?! Love you!

Nothing like a tall handsome man who asserts his style savvy in a camouflage jacket and blue-checked shirt. Add the desert boots and the pop of yellow from his oh-so-cool car and wow!

Enough About Me, An Interview with Margherita Maccapani Missoni

OMG OMG OMG. Just interviewd my fashion idol and new BFF (still love you Alessandra). So obviously I now know EVERYTHING about Missoni, but for those people who don’t, here is the official transcript of my interview.

image

Marina: Tell us about Missoni.

Margherita: Missoni is a family-run fashion house that started in 1953 when my grandparents Tai and Rosita Missoni started designing fun and unusual patterned knits in the neighborhood of Varese, Italy. After years of hard work and working together, the brand has become known around the world for unique knitwear, in a kaleidoscope of colorful patterns such as zigzags, stripes, geometrics and abstract florals.

Marina: So I’ve obviously studied every zigzag, stripe and floral and kaleidoscope print and knit you have ever designed and their evolution over the years, but why don’t you tell me about the iconic Missoni prints and your thoughts on their stylish evolution?

Margherita: My grandfather always jokes that our prints “have taken from Missoni for thousands years”.  He means that our tie-dyes, stripes and zigzags exist in many cultures and they’re not original. When they started making prints in the early fifties, the only possible pattern was horizontal stripes. Can you imagine? No looms to make them vertical, for instance. So, Missoni progressed from that point, and it went on and on. We were able to improve and invent new motives to create our language based on patterns, tones and stitches.

Marina: Target so sounds cool, like they have a history in fashion with some pretty fabulous designers. What made you want to partner with them?

Margherita: We enjoy the Target brand – it’s fun and known for taking risks – and like what they’ve done with their past designer collections. We also were excited by the idea of creating a collection for a mass audience, which is something we haven’t done before.

Marina: So I have imagined a gazillion answers to this question - trust me I have spent many hours on my shelf thinking about it- but I want to know from you, as do all the other fashionistas out there, what was the inspiration for this fabulous collection?

Margherita: The Missoni brand boomed in the late 1960s, marking an iconic moment in our history, and we felt it was important to return to this era as our inspiration for the Target collection, but updated with a fresh, modern edge.

Marina: Ok. Let’s talk favorites. Which section – clothing, accessories, bikes, furniture, home – was your absolute favorite to design?

Margherita: We really enjoyed designing products that were new and fresh to Missoni, like the bikes and iPad cases – they are so great!

Marina: Do you have a favorite piece? I love everything, so I understand if you can’t pick.

Margherita: I love the blue zig-zag puffer jacket and the black and white zig-zag coat.

Marina: Alright. Let’s take a break from the fashion talk and find out about what the stylish Missoni family does at home. How about food you eat and favorite things to drink when you sit down to lunch with your family? And more importantly, when am I invited to lunch?!

Margherita: We grow a lot of seasonal vegetables in our gardens. With them we cook risotto and other special dishes. We like to elaborate our regional cuisine’s tradition, bringing tastes from allover the world, mixing them with our tastes, reinventing flavors. Wines also are reds and whites from Liguria, Emilia, Piemonte and Friuli Venezia Giulia. It depends on food and seasons.

Marina: OMG I’m hungry. I can’t wait to come over!

Margherita: (silence)

Marina: Moving on…. Let’s be honest. Missoni is everywhere, as it should be, from fabulous barrettes to inspiring bicycles. Is there a large scale famous object, or doll from Italy…. wink wink, you would love to see covered in the Missoni zigzag like an airplane or the Taj Majal?

Margherita: A contemporary building, maybe designed by Frank Gehry, with his kind of organic fluid structures, houses evoking nature and visual art - two worlds I really like and watch all the time.

A thousand kisses to Margherita for taking the time to speak with me. I can’t wait to see her in NYC!

Covered in Stripes

Left to right, up and down, whichever way you wear them, stripes are always stylish. Just look at this girl in the park I spotted. Stripes in every direction! I had to stop and compliment her for being one of the many stylish women who have been putting sass in fashion for decades. Just check out style icons like Coco Chanel, Marilyn Monroe and Brigitte Bardot who gave stripes some serious sex appeal… unlike myself and my uneven tan.

Tan Lines

Wore my new hot pink bikini at the beach and the girls loved it. Not a cloud in the sky, just my shadow. Glad I could provide the girls with some extra coverage. Unfortunately I fell asleep in the noon sun and my porcelain skin is, well….. yikes! I have stripes!

I Salute You

I could do nothing but stop and salute this girl’s modern take on military style. Even from a bird’s-eye view this doll can always spot a chic statement. Military detailing has been setting trends since the 1940’s, with pieces that can easily mix and match with other styles. It really is something to take your hat off to.

Deco Me Out

Decided to do a little history search on fashion in NYC and fell in L-O-V-E with art deco architecture and fashion. Flapper dresses with beads and sequins set against the skyscrapers of NYC? Well hello! I bet grandma has a few her mother’s flapper dresses hidden away in the closets I have yet to see. And now I know why she loves all those cool mirrored tables in her sitting room. Art deco awesomeness. I need to call her and find out more. If I swoon over these styles any more I am going to fall down like a tree.

Packing Preparation

Ok ladies, in less than 3 weeks I am going to be in NYC. OMG. I still can’t wrap my porcelain head around this, but I need to start mentally packing. It seems black is always the new black in NYC, the color that never goes out of style. Any advice on what to pack?

Pop In to the Pop Up Store Madness

People! Get this. FASHION’S NIGHT OUT. September 8th. Put it in your calendars. Target kicks off a three day pop-up store to celebrate the launch of the Missoni for Target collection. That means you can shop the collection before it goes public on the 13th! Wait, it gets better. Angela Missoni and my BFF Margherita Maccapani Missoni will BE THERE. This is coming straight from my Target contact’s mouth, and I quote, “The first 20 people who spend more than $100 get the chance to take a family-style portrait with the Missonis themselves.”  GASP. I need to go collect myself. See you on FNO!

You Can Never Disco Too Much

I couldn’t help myself. I had to share this girl’s look. How could I not, with my newfound love of all-things disco? And how decadent is this girl in her shimmery top and sheer skirt? Just ask the man checking her out.
